Shape Up Somerville
Shape Up Somerville is a school-based program designed to prevent weight gain in culturally diverse, high-risk, early-elementary school children.
Most intervention elements were based in and around the school setting. Children were introduced to several fruits, vegetables, and healthy bean dishes through taste tests and cafeteria meals at the elementary school. Campaigns promoted walking to and from school. A nutrition and physical activity curriculum, implemented by classroom teachers, included a 30-minute lesson taught once a week for six months, along with 10-minute “cool moves” that allowed students to move around in the classroom. Structured after-school opportunities for physical activity were also provided.
